Susan Tsvangirai, Zimbabewean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s Wife, has died in a car crash after their 4-driven Toyota Land Cruiser was hit a US-made truck at the local time of 4pm near Harere on March 6. Susan, 50, married Morgan in 1978.
The Fridays’ deadly accident happened on the way when Mr. and Mrs. Tsvangirai were driven back to their rural home for a weekend rally. Morgan Tsvangirai survived but sustained injuries to his head and neck (see picture below). He was admitted to a private hospital in Harere. Zimbabewe’s madman Robert Mugage and his wife visited Tsvangirai, but this could not rule out the possibility that he was not the mastermind to orchestrate a freak accident that would have killed Morgan.
The crash immediately raised fears that the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) had been the target of an assassination attempt.
The MDC in South Africa said it was ‘dismayed’ at the crash.
‘The truth of the matter is that this is not a genuine accident,’ said spokesperson Sibanengi Dube in a statement.
‘This is a perfect organised hit which was designed to eliminate the President of MDC.
‘We sincerely believe that the powerful but notorious Zanu-PF clique is determined to do anything to scamper efforts by the inclusive government to get Zimbabwe back on the track.’
The collision comes just three weeks after 56-year-old Mr Tsvangirai was sworn in as prime minister in a government power-sharing deal with president Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party.
Mr Tsvangirai and his wife had been travelling to a weekend rally in his home region of Buhera, south of Harare, when their vehicle collided with a haulage lorry on one of Zimbabwe’s most dangerous roads.
However the MDC in Zimbabwe has said the driver fell asleep and that as yet there was no reason to suspect foul play.
Spokesman Nelson Chamisa, a spokesman for the MDC, said: ‘Mrs Tsvangirai died on the spot. The accident happened between 4pm and 5pm but the details are still sketchy. The driver of the truck appeared to be sleeping.’
But the MDC in South Africa pointed out that several of Mugabe’s enemies have died in suspicious road accidents.
Their statement added: ‘We strongly believe that these are the evil acts of a few individuals bent on derailing the progress of the inclusive government.
‘We are, however, alive to the fact that a lot of Robert Mugabe’s opponents died in suspicious road accidents involving army trucks.’

Update: Mr. Tsvangirai has left his country for Bostwana to seek the treatment and rest.
Mrs Tsvangirai was widely respected in Zimbabwe as the opposite of Mugabe’s extravagant and free-spending wife, Grace, who showed little concern for the plight of the many hungry and poor in her country. Susan Tsvangirai largely avoided the limelight but spoke out on women’s rights and Aids. She was deeply religious.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Tsvangirai’s family and their supporters!
