Young and promising rapper Dolla, real name Roderick Anthony Burton II, was shot and killed at the Beverly Center mall in Los Angeles in the afternoon of May 18, 2009. Posted here are Dollar’s pictures and his music videos from MySpace.
Dolla’s rep Sue Vannasing told LA Times he was shot in the head about 3:10 p.m. at the La Cienega Boulevard entrance to the shopping mall.
The 21-year-old rapper was based in Atlanta, Georgia. He was in Los Angeles recording his debut album Another Day, Another Dolla. Vannasing said Dolla had gotten into an altercation with other passengers on a flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles. But it’s unclear if the altercation was related to the violence.
On Monday afternoon, Dolla and his fellow rappers D.J. Shabbazz and Scrapp DeLeon did some shopping at the Beverly Center mall. When waiting in the valet area of the mall after shopping, Dolla and his friends may have involved in a group fight with others. The brawl ended with Dolla shot dead and the two suspects who followed the rapper earlier fleeing from the scene.
An employee working at a nearby restaurant was said to have seen a woman firing a handgun. A few hours later, LAPD arrested a man at Los Angeles International Airport who was believed to be the person of interest in connection with the shooting death of Dolla. He allegedly drove his silver Mercedes SUV from Beverly Center to the airport. According to TMZ, the man was named Aubery Berry, a 23-year-old African-American. The website also provided a few more details about Berry’s arrest:
Here’s what went down. Sources say after the shooting, the LAPD put out an alert that the suspect may have fled to the Los Angeles International Airport in an attempt to fly out of the city.
LAX police spotted a man who matched the description, sitting in the lobby area of Terminal 1. Cops approached Berry and almost immediately he said he knew why cops were there and then raised his hands and told them he had a 9 millimeter handgun in his waistband.
Dolla was born in Chicago, Illinois. His family moved to Atlanta when he was 5 after Dolla’s father committed suicide. Because of the hard livelihood of family, Dolla rapped around the Atlanta streets to support his family as a teenager. He first caught the attention of Missy Elliott and P. Diddy and then Akon in 2001. He eventually signed to Akon’s Konvict Muzik label in May 2007.
Dolla made his debut with the single Who the F–k Is That? featuring both Akon and T-Pain. His song, Feelin’ Myself, is featured on the Step Up soundtrack. He followed his debut single up with a second single I’m F–ked Up in the summer of 2008. A third single, entitled “Make a Toast,” was then officially released on November 4, 2008.
