Meet Khagendra Thapa Magar, from Nepal, is the shortest/smallest man in the world who will be officially recognized by Guinness World Records this October when he becomes 18 years old in October. Khagendra Thapa Magar reportedly measures 51 cm (2ft) tall and weighs 4.5 kg (10lbs).
“Once I am named as the world’s smallest man then I can fulfill my dream of visiting the United States of America.” Khagendra Thapa Magar said.
He Pingping, 20, from China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, currently is the title holder. Pingping, standing 2 feet 5 inches, was officially named by the Guinness World Records as the world’s shortest man who is able to walk in 2008.
Khagendra Magar received the international attention in 2006 when the first reports said he was applying for a Guinness World Record for his tiny size. The AP report on Boston.com dated September 1 2006 read
Khagendra Thapa Magar, 14, dances, as his mother Dhana Maya Thapa Magar looks on, in Baglung village, 270 kilometers (169 miles) west of Katmandu, Nepal, Monday, April 17, 2006. Magar, who is only 20 inches (50 centimeters) tall and weighs 4.5 kilograms (10 pounds), is waiting for word from the Guinness World Records, where he has applied to be named the shortest in the world, his supporters said on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006.
Guinness did not process his application immediately but promised to review the case when Khagendra Magar turns 18.
“We’re still looking into it and waiting for the final bit of evidence,” spokeswoman Kate White said. “We have the medical report, but are still waiting for the birth certificate. We’ll also want to speak to doctors. … We want to make sure of that he is fully grown.” [AP]
“There is a possibility that he could be the shortest person in the world, however Guinness World Records cannot examine more details until he reaches the age of 18 years,” The Reuters quoted Amarilis Espinoza, a Guinness World Records spokeswoman as saying. [Ptr]
Now only nearly 3 years have been past since 2006 September, new reports in recent weeks said Khagendra Thapa Magar would be crowned as the world shortest man in October, 2009 because he will be 18 years old that month. This just makes me feel a bit puzzled.
As mentioned above, Khagendra Magar was said to be 14 years old in various news reports in 2006 September, 3 years after, he is 18 years old? The simple math of 14+3 equals 17, right?
To answer how old Khagendra Thapa Magar is, we have to look into his birth day. Many reports simply mentioned he was born in 1992, the Age provided a more accurate date 1992 October 4. According to Tmes of India, it seemed Magar’s birthday is on October 14.
If Khagendra Magar was truly born in October 1992, he would be only 17 this October, show you the calculation,10/1992-10/1993(One), 10/1993-10/1994(Two), 10/1994-10/1995(Three), …, 10/2007-10/2008(Sixteen), 10/2008-10/2009(Seventeen).
While according to Wikipedia, Khagendra Thapa Magar was born in October, 1991. If Wikipedia’s birth date was correct, Khagendra would be 18 years old in a bit over three months and should be eligible to meet Guinness’s age requirement for the category for the shortest man.

Although there is no doubt for Magar’s tiny size which may, what’s his exact height and weight? It was generally sensed that Khagendra didn’t grow in the past three years, he seemly remained 51 cm (20 inches) tall and 4.5 kg (10lbs). But there were contradictory data concerning with his height and weight, e.g. in Wikipedia, Khagendra Thapa Magar is said to be “60 cm (24 inches) at age 16″ and “now only about 5.5 kg (12 lbs),” Gulf Times said he is 60cm tall while in The Age, he is “only 50 cm tall”.
All those discrepancies will only be resolved on the day when Guinness Book of World Records officiates Khagendra Thapa Magar as the world’s shortest man.
Update: According to this Xinhua report, Khagendra Thapa Magar turned 18 years old on Wednesday October 14, 2009 2009. He is to submit another application to the Guiness Book of World Records, to recognized him as the world’s smallest man.
