Update: President Barack Obama’s statement on his Nobel Peace Prize

Transcripts:

“Good morning. Well, this is not how I expected to wake up this morning. After I received the news, Malia walked in and said, “Daddy, you won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is Bo’s birthday!” And then Sasha added, “Plus, we have a three-day weekend coming up.” So it’s good to have kids to keep things in perspective.

I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel Committee. Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations.

To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who’ve been honored by this prize — men and women who’ve inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build — a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it’s also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. And that is why I will accept this award as a call to action — a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century.”

Barely Clad Lady on a bus

It seemed some a Chinese netizen felt not so comfortable with a lady who wore a string top and white mini-shorts when riding a public bus. He/she photographed the lady some feet away and later posted the picture onto the Netease:

Scantly clad! Sexy MM (girl/lady) photographed on a bus during National Day holiday [China currently enjoys an 8-day long National Day holiday]

Some say this is polluting the eyeballs of the people…

Some say this attracts people to commit the crime…

“She should observe her code of conduct in a public place,” one commented. Read the rest of this entry »

Fish Mass death photo

From Netease

Since September 27, 2009, massive death of fish happened in the Huangxi section of Ting River(汀江) in Shanghang County, Longyan Prefecture of Fujian Province [China] . Millions of kilograms of more than half of various species of freshwater fish cultured by about 60 fish farmers suddenly died, causing a tremendous financial loss worth over tens of millions of Yuan. The cause for fish mass death may be because the river was polluted, or due to the eutrophication resulting from the extreme high density fish farming…No matter whichever reason is, the accidents have caused not only the disastrous loss to the fish farmers, but also the immeasurable damage to the local ecology. Ting River is known as the Hokka Mother River. The national key water storage project Mianhuatan Reservoir located at its downstream area. Ting River is the important water source for the cities/areas like Yongding of Longyan, Meizhou City and Dapu County of Guangdong Province. If the water is polluted, it will pose a great threat to the security of the drinking water of the people who live at the lower river area. Hope the concerned authorities pay attention to this kind of matter so that the things won’t go from bad to worse. Read the rest of this entry »
