Update: Kangkang’s case has caught the attention of international media. According to reports, Kangkang will receive free corrective surgery for his two/double faces at a hospital in Shanghai. From Australia’s Ninemsn:

Zhao Huikang [full name of Kangkang] suffers from a severe form of macrostomia, a condition that leaves sufferers with an abnormally wide mouth [...] Family members encouraged his mother Yi Zilian to abandon him but she refused.

“The only thing I could do is to give him more love and more care and try our best to make him live a normal life,” she said.

Zhao’s deformity appeared so severe doctors were reluctant to let his mother see him after he was born, according to reports.

A Shanghai hospital has decided to provide free surgery to the boy to correct the deformity but Dr Ren Tianping said he may need many procedures over time as he grows up.

“Since he can’t chew, the boy also suffers malnutrition,” Dr Tianping said.

“Our surgery will ensure he can eat.”

The procedures will repair the facial bones, muscles and surface tissue but doctors are still unsure whether the surgery will be successful.

Meet Shanghai’s ‘Susan Boyle,’ a mid-aged chicken woman seller in a wet market whose voice was cherished by tens of millions of Chinese.

Shanghai Susan Boyle Chicken Selling Auntie

Shanghai ‘Suan Boyle’, whose name is not revealed, is from a rural village in Anhui province and went to make livings in Shanghai by selling chicken. She did not receive any formal English education and musical training, yet commanded to sing English Christian gospel as well as Chinese folklore. Her voices entertained those who either come to the market to buy something or those who make sales at the market. For such, she was called Auntie Sweetie.

Auntie Sweetie who previously was only known to the local community was catapulted into the national stardom when a clip showing her rendition of Amazing Grace was uploaded into Chinese video portal Youku.com on March 31, 2010.

In the clip, Auntie Sweetie was seen with her hair tied into two pigtails and dressed in a red shirt with a Hello Kitty apron which had resulted in some netizens mistaking her for the late Hong Kong billionaire Nina Wang (Kung Yu Sum).

The video garnered many records –most popular, most people favored, most controversial and most recommended–at Youku, and also broke the record of the shortest time of a clip to become the most popular after being uploaded.

The Youtube video above only showing Auntie Sweetie singing Amazing Grace session was a cut-out from the original 9-minute footage which was apparently the mastermind of two young guys who intentionally went to the chicken stall to tease her sing so that they bought her chicken legs.

Immediately after the video appeared online, Auntie Sweetie was soon hailed as Shanghai Susan Boyle.

Polydactyly, a congenital physical anomaly in humans occurs an incidence of 1 in every 1000 live births. For this somewhat common condition, India’s Pranamya Menaria and Devendra Harne, jointly held a record of having most digits –they both have 12 fingers and 13 toes.

Interestingly, the record was broken by a boy from China. The unnamed 6-year-old had unprecented 31 digits, which included 15 fingers and 16 toes! This boy’s central polydactyly condition saw his middle fingers and toes duplicated.

His family did not go to apply for a Guinness World Record, rather sent him to Shengjing Hospital affiliated with China Medical University in Shenyang recently to undergo a surgery to remove the extras because he suffered from the inconvenience in the daily life and also being ridiculed from peers of the same age at his school.

The hours-long operation was quite successful. Doctors removed the index finger and the middle one of three fused fingers on both hands (also the one at the end of the right thumb) and the outer three additional digits on his feet. He was expected to have a full recovery within half a year.
