Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo, of Portugal, won the title of FIFA World Player of the Year during the FIFA World Player Gala 2008 at the Opera house in Zurich, Switzerland, Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, beating Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Spain’s Fernando Torres. C. Ronaldo, 23 years old, has made the history because he isthe first English Premier League player ever to claim the FIFA award since it was introduced in 1991.

Speaking of his success, Ronaldo, who recently crashed his Ferrari sports car in an accident, couldn’t but help credit coach Sir Alex Ferguson, “It was a great season for my club and the coach was important for me because I learnt a lot from him. He has immense experience. You know a good player could never make it without a great coach. It’s been a privilege to play under him.”

Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo was involved in a car crash (picture avbove) on January 8, BBC reported. C. Ronaldo crashed his red Ferrari sports car in a tunnel near Manchester Airport. Fortunately, he left unhurt though his pricey vechile was severely damaged. Ronaldo who was confirmed by his club in the accident later did not drive under influence and the police is investigating the cause.
The accident happened on the A538 Altrincham Road, between Wilmslow and Hale, Cheshire, at about 1020 GMT [January 8].
The footballer’s red Ferrari was badly damaged in the crash, with the front edge of the vehicle completely demolished.
One of the wheels came off, ending up about 200 yards behind where the vehicle came to rest.
‘Obviously shaken’
Onlooker Jody Lomax was driving behind Ronaldo when the crash happened.
“The Ferrari went straight into the wall, his front left-hand wheel came off and then Ronaldo got out of the car,” he said.
“I was shocked. Anyway he was all right, he was walking – he was a bit shaken.”
Mr Lomax added: “Obviously I was stunned at seeing a Ferrari go in the wall and seeing Ronaldo.
“He was obviously shaken – who wouldn’t be? – but it’s a shame about the car as well.”
Manchester United confirmed that Ronaldo was not hurt.
A club spokesman said: “He was involved in an incident this morning. No other cars were involved.
“He’s fine and is training as normal with the team this morning.”
