Capt. Shane Murphy, 33, is the second in command of Maersk Alabama the US-flagged ship hijacked by Somali pirates, his father revealed to the Cape Cod Times. Capt. Joseph Murphy, a professor who teaches the Maritime Security Management at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, said his son Capt. Shane Murphy is the vessel’s Chief Officer and a graduate from the academy in 2001.
According to senior Murphy, his son knew about threats of pirates off Somali coasts. And just a few weeks ago while back in Masschusettes, junior Murphy talked with his father’s students about the dangers of Somali pirates at the latter’s classes.
Capt. Shane Murphy was the first one identified among those of 20 Americans aboard hijacked Maersk Alabama at the time of this entry was posted.
