The Caijing Magazine website reports that Guangzhou news presenter Li Yong is currently under investigation for suspected involvement in a high-profile corruption case, that has ended the careers of several of China’s most senior politicans.
According to the news story, Guangzhou news presenter Li Yong was detained by the authorities yesterday, and is currently under criminal investigation. It is believed that she was apprehended by Beijing police in Beijing while preparing to leave the country. The authorities are currently demanding that she provide assistance into the investigation of a high-profile corruption case in Guangdong province, involving some of China’s most senior political figures.
Li Yong was born in 1976, and hails from China’s north-east. She is unmarried, and it is well known that for many years she has shared close relations with senior figures in Guangdong province politics. Inside figures have revealed that when the recent corruption case involving the former Guangdong Province Party Chief Wang Hua-yuan, and the current chairman of the Guangdong Province CPPCC Chen Shao-ji, initially broke, Li Yong first requested a vacation, before resigning from her position. At the same time, reports emerged that she was preparing to leave the country to pursue study overseas.
Li Yong is one of the leading figures in both the Guangdong province and national Chinese television media, holding multiple roles as a television news host and program presenter. She has previously served as the principal host for some of China’s most popular and highly-viewed television events, such as television coverage of the launch of the Chinese manned space vessel, Shenzhou no. 5, and China’s 9th National Games.
According to the news story, however, the impression of great wealth that Li Yong gave to others was “obviously not consonant with her regular income. Industry insiders reveal that she previously drove a Mercedes Benz, but recently upgraded to a Land Rover.”
The news story states that following widespread reports of this incident, the heads of the Guangdong Television Station travelled to Beijing, and the website for the television station removed all information about Li Yong. Internal reports within the television station claim she is currently assisting in the investigation of “economic crimes”.
A small correction on China News Wrap’s report and more details about Li Yong and Chen Shaoji below:
Wang Hua-yuan (王华元) mentioned in CNW’s report was not former Guangdong Province Party Chief (or General Secretary of CPC of Guangdong Province), but former Secretary of Guangdong CPC Discipline Inspection Commission. Wang previously said 50% of China’s corrupted officials have mistresses. Ironically, he was revealed to also have a mistress who is named Wang Mei-ling (王美玲, pseudonym Wang Hua-Ling, 王华玲) after his arrest in April. Wang Hua-yuan reportedly had a secret children with Wang Mei-ling.

Ms. Li Yong shared the same Pinyin name with Li Yong (李咏, photo above), an internationally known male host on China’s Central TV Station. The female Li Yong, English name Silvia, is from Jilin Province. She was born on April 9, 1976. She obtained her first degree from Yanbian University before she studied a Masters degree in Jilin University. Her motto is “Believes in Youself, Believe in Life, and Believe in Happiness.” Before she moved to Guangdong, Li Yong worked at Jilin TV Station.
